What is the Best Android Phone? – Mid 2018

May 11, 2018 0 By Marvin

I hear this question almost daily, What is the Best Android Phone? To which I almost always answer with it depends on who you ask and what experience do you have with Android. Android is becoming more mainstream as the years go by and Google I/O 2018 literally broke the internet with Google Duplex.

To better answer the question “What is the best Android phone?” you need to first understand what makes Android, Android. At the end of the article I will give you my pick for the best Android phone and a few honorable mentions

For me what makes Android stand out from the pack is its simplicity and a word you will find associated with the Android experience is “Vanilla”. Google defines Vanilla as “having no special or extra features; ordinary or standard”, If you appreciate white space design with clear defined windows and a clean color palette you will be an Android lover

The best software is software that doesn’t age, slow down or crash. When it comes to Android if you own a device that doesn’t have a skin over the top of Android you will be getting software updates pretty much as soon as they are released.

If you own a Pixel or Nexus device Google is very good at releasing smaller security patches monthly and bigger Android versions like Marshmallow, Oreo and P get released first on these devices before anyone else. This creates a kind of special club feel where you get to experience the latest and greatest features before anyone else

Early Adopters

Android phones tend to adopt new technology quicker than others. I personally don’t see the removal of a headphone jack as innovative ;).

Here is a quick list of features that Android adopted first and are now mainstream.

  • Fast Charging
  • Dual Cameras
  • Facial Recognition
  • Under Display Fingerprint Reader
  • Augmented Reality
  • Bezel-less Design
  • Water Resistant
  • OLED Display
  • 4K Displays
  • Gigabit LTE
  • Virtual 5.1 Surround SoundWhat-is-the-best-android-phone

As you can see most of the features above make up big part of why you like your current device or hate it for the lack of the feature. To reference Dougie/General Disarray – “Simpsons did it first”

If you want to be ahead of the curve and an early adopter of new technology you definitely want to be an Android user. So what is the best Android phone?… See below for my verdict

Virtual Assistant

I’m not someone that enjoys talking to their phone, but those people do exist, and if you own any Google Smart Speakers or Android Auto, you will be using this feature more than the average person. Google Assistant is a virtual assistant created by google that doesn’t compete with Apples Siri or Samsungs Bixby, it completely obliterates them….

Google Assistant just took a quantum leap against its lesser competition with the announcement of Google Duplex. This scary/exciting/confusing development, pushes what we thought was possible with the virtual assistant into the realm of real, convincing AI. See the video below and make up your own mind

So What is the Best Android Phone?

The moment of truth has finally arrived, I have broken down a few reasons why the Android platform overall is an amazing platform. So taking into account all that has been said above, my pick for the best Android phone is…. The Pixel 2

Product Review

Product – Pixel 2 XL

Price – $849 (64GB Model Retail)

Cheapest Place to Buy – Amazon.com

My Rating – 8 out of 10

Why the Pixel 2 XL?

Google Mantra

The Pixel 2 XL is the best Android phone in my opinion because it encompasses everything I mentioned above. The Pixel 2 is simple and vanilla in design. What it does it does well, It updates quicker than any other Android device, it is feature rich and dependable.

The Pixel 2 XL doesn’t have the best screen in the world, that belongs to the Galaxy S9/S9+ in my opinion. One thing I don’t have to worry about with the Pixel 2 XL that I worry about daily with my S8+, its durability. The Samsung Galaxy S8 with its gorgeous infinity display has me as worried about dropping it as much as the Avengers were worried about Thanos and his damn gauntlet. When or if you drop the Pixel 2 XL you aren’t worried about it shattering into a thousand pieces instantly.

You will easily get a full day of use out of the Pixel 2 XL. It doesn’t have wireless charging capabilities but the Fast Charger charges the phone fast enough that this is a non factor

The camera on the Pixel is one of the industry leaders when it comes to camera performance and reliability. It’s not a dual camera but more than makes up for those shortcomings with the use of Artificial Intelligence. This camera learns the more you use it through the use of some clever software and produces some of the nicest photos you will see from a mobile phone.

What is the Best Android Phone ? The Pixel 2 XL

Some honorable mentions:

  • Pixel 2
  • Nexus 6P
  • Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ & S9/S9+
