What is Google Duplex? – One Step Closer to True A.IMay 14, 2018
Unless you have been living under a rock this past week, you will be aware that at Google’s annual I/O they released something groundbreaking. It’s called Google Duplex, it’s purpose at this point in time is to make phone calls, speak to real people and book appointments for you.
It’s pretty creepy and if you watched the I/O presentation you would have seen a number of different emotions from the crowd. Check out this video and make up your own mind.
So what is Google Duplex? read on to find out what it is and how it can benefit us moving forward.
Using Google’s powerful algorithms this virtual assistant can navigate its way through a straight forward conversation with a Person. The example of booking an appointment is very straight forward, but it still had to take into account accents, inflections, questions, and conflict resolution.
During the few conversations we got to witness, it’s almost as if the human on the other end of the line wasn’t aware that they were talking to a computer. Since then, Google has made us aware that the Google Assistant will announce itself as a virtual assistant at the beginning of each conversation, this gets around the ethical side of things.
“It’s important to us that users and businesses have a good experience with this service, and transparency is a key part of that. We want to be clear about the intent of the call so businesses understand the context. We’ll be experimenting with the right approach over the coming months.” – Google
The fact that google duplex can have a conversation is pretty cool, but what makes me excited is the fact that this Beta version of duplex aced the Turing Test!
What is the Turing test you ask ?? Wiki defines the Turing test as ” The Turing test, developed by Alan Turing in 1950, is a test of a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.”, fun fact Benedict Cumberbatch played Alan Touring in the 2014 hit “The Imitation Game” but I digress.
As you can see from the video above and the explanation of the Turing Test. Google Duplex passes with flying colors. Taking into account we don’t see the Duplex gag reel, what we are presented is pretty impressive.
The Turing test is usually conducted with 3 participants. One of which is a computer, keeping that in mind, with 2 participants it is still very impressive.
Is Google Duplex True Artificial Intelligence
As impressive as Google Duplex is, I still feel we are very far away from True A.I. I can’t help but feel like this is a massive step up in the capabilities for the google assistant. It puts massive pressure on the likes of Siri and Bixby. This excites me even more because pressure makes diamonds or in this case A.I.
If we look to the future you will see how far away we are from True A.I. True Artificial Intelligence needs to be able to interact with multiple people, understand moods and feelings, learn and dream. To some, the future may be scary, but to me it’s exciting, Duplex gives us a glimpse into the future.
What is Google Duplex? At this point in time, Duplex is the appearance of Artificial Intelligence, not the presence of it. So to all those freaking out, this isn’t the dawn of the machines. You’re safe, your job is safe and the T-800 isn’t going to bash down your door and Will Smith still has 2 human arms.
I look forward to the future of A.I and Google Duplex
The first phones to have Duplex will be the Pixel line up, check out my review on the Pixel 2.
