Nintendo Switch Accessories – For Playing Fortnite

Nintendo Switch Accessories – For Playing Fortnite

June 25, 2018 12 By Marvin

On the 12th of June Switch owners rejoiced as the most popular game on the planet was finally available on their favorite console. I had the opportunity to try Fortnite out on the Switch earlier today and I came away with 2 big first impressions.

  1. This game looks great on the Nintendo Switch, docked and un-docked
  2. The Switch, unfortunately, isn’t designed for playing shooters for a long period of time. Ergonomically it’s not great, especially for a sweat-inducing game like Fortnite.

Good news though, impression number 2 can be all but eliminated with a few well picked Nintendo Switch Accessories that won’t break the bank.

Controllers

Joy-Cons are great but they aren’t exactly made for long hours of intense shooter gameplay. The Pro Controller is definitely better than the Joy-Cons, but I would much rather choose an X Box One Controller or PS4 Controller

SUNWAYTECH Bluetooth Motion Controller

If you squint slightly this controller looks very similar to the Xbox One controller. For the money, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. It works as advertised and pairs easily via Bluetooth. It does have Motion Control should you choose to use it for games like Super Mario Kart.

The plastic construction makes this control feel cheap but the substantial feel, ergonomic design and decent quality of the triggers and buttons make this a well-rounded controller. At half the cost of the Pro Controller, this is a decent alternative to the Joy-Cons.

8Bitdo Wireless USB Adapter

You may actually have a suitable controller lying around and not even realize it. If you already own an Xbox or PS4 as well as a Switch not only are you spoilt for choice, but you could be using the Xbox or PS4 controller. 8Bitdo are known for their funky retro controllers and a while back they created this handy little USB Adapter that allows you to pair another console’s wireless controller to the Switch.

Simply plug the adapter into an available USB slot on your Switch, follow the pairing instructions and Tadaa you are using your Xbox Controller on the Switch. If you have any unused controllers lying around, at 1/4 the price of ta Switch Pro Controller you can’t go past the 8Bitdo USB Adapter

Cases

A big problem I find with the switch is its “Grippyness”, when gaming for long periods of time and especially while playing sweat inducing titles like Fortnite, you will notice the console becomes very slippery. I have found a few accessories that can fix this issue.

YCCTEAM Protective Case

As mentioned previously, the ergonomics of the Switch aren’t great. The YCCTEAM Protective case addresses this as well as the “Grippyness”. This case is made out of TPU and has a breathable design to help with heat dispersion. The case has integrated grips behind the Joy-Cons and adds a bit of extra girth to the controls.

This case provides a good amount of impact protection due to its TPU construction. Is easy to put on the Switch and gives you full access to everything besides being able to dock the device and remove the Joy-Cons, it’s easily removable so those cons aren’t a big deal. You can get this case in Black, Grey, Green, and Blue.

Like most things mentioned in this article, the affordability of the cover makes this a bargain upgrade tor your switch.

Mumba Case

The benefits of having a case like the Mumba is the quick and easy application and console protection. The Mumba Case is very utilitarian and offers heavy-duty drop protection, personally, I actually prefer the look of the Switch when it is in this case. The case does increase the ergonomics of the switch and make it more comfortable in hand.

This case is pretty basic but is absolutely one of the better-looking covers for the Switch. It comes in black, blue, green and red. If you’re looking for a solidly built case that will protect your Switch and add a unique look to it, this is your case.

Stands

If your plan is to start playing Fortnite then the result at some point is going to be you being kicked off the main TV in the house. The Switch is possibly the best console to be kicked off the TV with due to is portability. All you need is a decent stand to mount your Switch.

HORI Compact Playstand

Hori-Playstand

For some the built-in kickstand is fine, but if you are going to be playing Fortnite you will need a stand that allows you to charge your device at the same time. That’s where the HORI Compact Playstand comes in.

This simply designed foldable stand, allows you to elevate your switch to a more comfortable viewing angle and gives you the ability to charge the device at the same time. There’s not much more to say about this stand other than, I wish Nintendo took the time and effort to create a stand like this when launching the console.

AmazonBasics Playstand

The AmazonBasics Stand is very similar to the HORI Compact Playstand in its functionality. One point of difference is its ability to provide a lot more viewing angles than the HORI, otherwise its very similar and offers the same charge and play functionality.

It will come down to whether you like the look and price of the AmazonBasic or the HORI.

Headsets

Last but not least, you will need a decent headset. Something that is the norm for other console users has been missing from the Switch since launch, until now. A big surprise for Switch users was that Fortnite was going to support native in-game chat, at this point in time Fortnite is the only game on the Switch that does.

If you plan to play Fortnite on a team, its necessary to have a headset. A good headset will allow you to hear your enemies as they move around the map and strategize with your friends when playing as a squad.

HyperX Cloud Stinger

Like everything else on this list, I don’t want you spending your life savings. The HyperX Cloud Stinger is no exception. I personally own a pair of these and I can’t fault them, I’m no audiophile but the audio on this headset is always clear and crisp.

This lightweight headset has 90-degree rotating ear cups, 50mm drivers and volume control on the ear cup. Speaking about the ear cup, the memory foam that is present on this headset has got to be one of the biggest selling points, the memory foam allows the headset to become a custom fit to your head and ear shape, allowing for an immersive audio experience.

This headset is priced well and definitely stands out at its price point. I would position the HyperX Cloud Stinger as a great entry level headset and perfectly paired for the Nintendo Switch

End Game

Seems like we have come to an end, at the end of the day Fortnite is a great game and it is at home on the Switch. If you want to enhance your gaming experience, the few inexpensive Nintendo Switch accessories above will no doubt add some value.
