When I first saw this product announced I was amazed. Seriously, I turned to my wife and showed her, she wasn’t as impressed as me, but I digress. You are here to find out if there is a 1TB Micro SD Card, short answer, yes. Is there a 1TB Micro SD Card for you? maybe.

Is There a 1TB Micro SD Card?

Let me explain, not all Micro SD cards are made equally. If it has been a while since you’ve bought portable flash storage, you’re in for a surprise. The market has grown drastically since inception in 1999. Micro SD cards have become the most popular purchase for flash storage in recent years. You can find them in Phones, Drones, Laptops, and Wireless Cameras.

Micro SDs come in a few different abbreviations microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC. MicroSD Think of these as generations, ranging from oldest to newest. MicroSD is the original iteration of this technology, it can be used in most products. MicroSDXC and SHUC are newer, make sure your device supports these iterations before purchasing.

Capacity

  • microSD – Micro Secure Digital
  • microSDHC – Micro Secure Digital High Capacity
  • microSDXC – Micro Secure Digital eXtended Capacity
  • microSDUC – Micro Secure Digital Ultra Capacity

The only thing you can tell from the name is the capacity of the card. SD is up to 2GB, SDHC is 2GB – 32GB, and SDXC is 32GB – 2TB, and SDUC is 2TB to 128TB.

Speed Class

Speed is shown as a Class and is the minimum read-write speed. There are 5 different classes; Class 2, Class 4, Class 6, Class 8, and Class 10. Class 2 is 2 MB/s and Class 10 is 10 MB/s, you can fill in the others.

There are a lot more things that differentiate microSD cards, but those are these are the most important for someone just looking for added storage

Do you need a 1TB MicroSD card?

Before you throw a serious amount of cash at a 1TB Micro SD Card, do you actually need one?. Realistically, only a small percentage of people need a Micro SD Card this big, if you do, more power to you. If you don’t, its a colossal waste of money and flash memory. Here are a few examples of what 1TB of different file types looks like.

1TB of storage equals:

  • 250 Movies
  • 85,899,345 pages of Word documents
  • 200,000 Songs
  • 310,000 photos

Disclaimer – These numbers are based on the average size of each type of file

You should also find out if the device you are looking to insert the card into supports 1TB of expansion. If you are thinking about expanding your mobile phone memory. Check that your phone supports 2TB microSD spec before you purchase.

As I write this article, the only 1TB microSD card available and compatible with most things is the SanDisk 1TB Extreme MicroSDXC. You get up to 160MB/s read speeds and up to 90MB/s write speeds. SanDisk is a very reputable company when it comes to flash storage, they rarely miss a beat.

Real-life applications for this level of storage would be centered around shooting 4K video. If you spend a lot of time creating Ultra HD Video Content, this card is for you. If you want to buy it just to flex, that’s ok too.

Currently, you can pick this microSDXC up on Amazon for $439.99USD

Price

Before you buy a 1TB MicroSD, there is one thing you need to know. Current pricing for a 1TB MicroSD is 4-5x the price of a 500GB MicroSD. Let that sink in. You could buy two 500GB MicroSD from SanDisk for half the price of one 1TB MicroSD card.

Like all tech, the price will come down the older the tech becomes. The 1TB is only a few months old. and realistically only serves the outliers.

Summary

Hopefully, this article on is there a 1TB Micro SD card helped shed some light on MicroSD cards as a whole. My intention is to give out information so that you can make smarter purchases. MicroSD can be confusing, and I’m sure I will be revisiting this topic later. If you need a 1TB MicroSD, get it. If you want more storage and don’t want to break the bank, get two 500GB MicroSD Cards.

Cheers
