Best External Hard Drive for PS4June 5, 2019
I’m a pretty big console gamer, as you all know. I love consoles, I always have. The one thing I don’t love about consoles is their ability to fill up internal storage in the blink of an eye. Regardless of the storage option you choose when you purchase a console, you can be pretty much guaranteed that you will fill it up. Most modern Triple AAA titles range between 30-60 Gigabits. Download a couple of those and in no time you will start needing something more. In this article I will be going through a couple external hard drives, and at the end I will crown The Best External Hard Drive for PS4.
As always, I will give you a few options based on cost and value. If you like any of the options, feel free to drop a comment in the comment section and let me know.
What External Hard Drives are Compatible with PS4
If you have reached this page it is because you are on the market for an external hard drive for you PS4. There are many hard drive options out there, but PS4 is very strict on what is compatible. To save you time and money, here are the compatibility guidelines for PS4.
- Must be USB 3.0 or Higher – External Hard Drives won’t work with the PS4 unless they are USB 3.0 or higher
- Wired Connection – You can only connect a hard drive via a wired connection. PS4 is not wireless compatible
- Storage Capacity Range – You need a hard drive that is minimum 250GB and a maximum of 8TB, any more or less and it won’t be recognized by your PS4
- No USB hubs – The hard drive will need to be connected directly to your PS4, if there is and external or internal USB hub inside your Hard Drive it will not connect.
- PS4 Will Format Drive – Your PS4 will format the drive completely and make it exclusively usable on PS4.
- No NAS Drives – NAS external drives aren’ supported, only USB drives will work.
- Single Layer Drives Only – If you connect a dual layer drive, PS4 will ignore the second layer
1. The Best External Hard Drive for PS4
Western Digital My Passport Ultra
Western Digital have always been well know for their Hard Drives, and the My Passport Ultra is no exception. This product has a 3-year factory warranty and it ranges from 1TB to 4TB. This hard drive is slim at 4.33 x 3.21 x 0.5 in, and you can get it in multiple color ways to match your PS4.
The WD Passport Ultra is USB C ready and USB 3.0 compatible. Read and write speeds are around the 120MB/s, it isn’t the fastest thing on the planet, but it will get the job done as back up storage for your PS4. You can pick up the 1TB model on Amazon for $59.99 USD, 2TB model for $79.99 USD, and the 4TB model for $113.99 USD. Considering that this drive comes with a 3-year warranty, it really is a decent bargain.
2. Best PlayStation Licensed Option
Seagate Game Drive for PS4
The Seagate Game Drive is the only device on the list today that is an official PS4 licensed product. Now that may mean something to you or it may not. The Game Drive starts at 2TB and can go up to 4TB, it is styled to match your PS4 with its black case, blue accents, and PS logo.
Reviews have clocked this hard drive at 130MB/s read and write, which is quite impressive at this price point. You can pick up the 2TB model for $89.99 USD, and the 4TB model for $115 USD. If you are someone that is worried about warranty, the Game Drive comes with warranty that protects your PS4 as well. If you aren’t one to worry about warranty, Seagate makes the Game Drive without the PS4 licensing and it is a little cheaper.
3. Best Budget Option
Toshiba Canvio Basics
The Toshiba Canvio Basics is on the list today due to its affordability and performance. Its matte black look will match your PS4 perfectly and give it that stealth look. Storage options go up to 4TB and it has USB 3.0.
There aren’t many bells and whistles on the Canvio basic, but that doesn’t mean it’s a slouch in the performance department. You will get a consistent read and write speed of 150MB/s, which is the best on my list today. Its a solid option for increasing your PS4 Storage. You can pick up the 1TB model for $46.99 USD, 2TB model for $58.99 USD, and 4TB model for $94.99 USD. The entire range comes in at under $100 USD with a 1-year warranty.
4. Cool Tech
The Western Digital My Passport Wireless SSD should never be your first option when it comes to and External Hard Drive for your PS4. That being said, it is so damn cool. Let me run through what this thing can do. It comes in 250GB to 2TB models and is housed in a shock resistant cover. It’s an SSD and it can reach a whopping 390MB/s read/write speed when connected via USB 3. Speed drops substantially when used wirelessly, but that is to be expected.
It has a 10 hr battery life and an SD card reader. That being said, realistically this Hard Drive is catering to someone that is one the move constantly, like a photographer. You definitely could use it as an external hard drive for your PS4, should you ? Not really. The 250GB model is priced at $199.99 USD and can reach $738 USD for the 2TB model, that’s a lot of mulla.
I had to mention this Hard Drive on the list today. Purely for its coolness and straight up outrageousness, I love it.
